What is Pilates? A system of movements using specialized equipment which offer resistance to controlled movements that work to increase flexibility, strengthen your core, sculpt your body, and build long, lean muscles.
How will I benefit from Pilates? With regular Pilates workouts (2-4 times a week) you will look and feel better! Your strength, flexibility, and balance will be greatly improved. You will challenge your core and develop strong abdominal muscles. You will reduce stress by focusing on particular movements related to your fitness goals and proper breathing techniques. You will find relief from common ailments such as mid and lower back pain. You may lose inches and your clothes may become looser.
Am I too old or young for Pilates? Pilates is for all ages. It can be modified to your current fitness level and goals. My youngest client is 11 years old and my oldest is 85.
What kind of equipment is used in a session? Various Pilates apparatus, mat, and props (resistance bands, exercise balls, and Pilates circles) are part of a balanced Pilates training and fitness routine.
Do I have to be in really good shape to do Pilates? Absolutely not! If you’re just starting out, you will learn basic Pilates moves and breathing techniques first. Once you are comfortable with the basics, then you can progress to resistance moves on the apparatus.
Can I do Pilates if I am pregnant? Yes, however it is not recommended to start a new exercise program when pregnant. Continuing a current program and modifying to suit specific needs is acceptable. The beauty of Pilates is that each session can be modified and personalized to the individual’s needs. Pilates provides some important modifications that allow pregnant women to participate in the training. It is essential that a pregnant woman remains off of their back during the pregnancy, as it can cause strain to both the fetus and the mother. Weight and resistance can also be modified to the individual’s needs. Physician’s medical clearance required.
If I have chronic back pain, can I do Pilates? Chronic back pain is a problem for many people and Pilates is often recommended for those suffering from it. Workouts will be modified to each individual’s needs. We always work to relieve you of your pain, rather than increase it. Please speak with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen.
What is the difference between Pilates matwork and equipment? Both versions of the movements use the same principles of bio-mechanical awareness to make them safe and effective. Matwork uses only your own body and small props for resistance, while the apparatus adds spring-loaded resistance to create additional support or challenge in performing the same kinds of movements. Focused matwork is an important foundation in a Pilates training program.
Should I take private lessons or group classes? Private instruction is customized to the specific needs of your body. Exercises are selected to build and balance weak muscles and modified to accommodate injured or sensitive joints. Private instruction is the best way to learn good technique and is particularly important for people who are injured or at risk of injury due to poor fitness. Large group instruction is most appropriate for non-injured people with a moderate to high level of fitness and body awareness. Let’s discuss your particular needs and design the appropriate Pilates program for you.
